What is Gemstique?
Gemstique is an online gemstone house offering carefully selected natural gemstones, with a strong focus on transparency, responsible sourcing, and trust. Our gemstones are sourced primarily from Sri Lanka and supplied to retail buyers, private collectors, jewellery professionals, and trade buyers in Singapore and worldwide.
Why does Gemstique source gemstones from Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka, historically known as Serendib and Ceylon, is one of the world’s most celebrated gemstone origins. For over two thousand years, the island has produced exceptional sapphires and a wide range of fine coloured gemstones admired for their natural beauty and integrity.
Sri Lankan gemstones are renowned for:
- Naturally vibrant yet elegant colours
- High clarity due to gentle geological formation
- A long tradition of artisanal mining and cutting
Sourcing from Sri Lanka allows Gemstique to maintain transparency from mine to market and preserve the story behind each stone — not just its appearance.
Does Gemstique sell gemstones sourced from countries other than Sri Lanka?
At this moment, no. All our gemstones are primarily sourced from Sri Lanka.
Can Gemstique guarantee that all gemstones originate in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is both a gemstone sourcing and selling hub, so some stones listed may have originated elsewhere. If a customer needs verified country-of-origin documentation, Gemstique can arrange lab verification at an additional cost.
Is Sri Lanka considered an ethical source for gemstones?
Sri Lanka has a long heritage in gemstone mining, and many licensed local suppliers follow responsible practices, including fair labour standards and environmentally conscious mining. At Gemstique, we always aim to source gemstones from suppliers who adhere to ethical mining and responsible sourcing practices.
While the overall industry benefits from government oversight and established standards, ethical outcomes depend on working with reputable suppliers and maintaining transparent supply chains. Independent certification and traceability can be arranged for added assurance.
Does Gemstique fulfil customised requirements?
Yes. Gemstique works closely with customers to fulfil bespoke requirements, whether for specific gemstone sizes, cuts, or types. Each custom order is carefully crafted to meet the desired specifications while maintaining the highest quality and ethical sourcing standards.
Are Gemstique gemstones natural?
Yes. All gemstones sold by Gemstique are natural unless clearly stated otherwise.
Are gemstone treatments disclosed?
Yes — always. Any treatment or enhancement is fully disclosed before purchase.
What types of treatments are common in gemstones?
Some gemstones may undergo treatments to enhance colour or clarity. Common treatments include:
- Heating – to improve colour or transparency (common in sapphires and rubies)
- Clarity enhancement – filling fractures to improve visual clarity
- Surface coating – rare, applied to improve colour appearance
Do all gemstones come with certification?
Gemstones above a certain value are supplied with certification from reputed Sri Lankan gem laboratories.
Upon request, international certification such as GRS or AGL can be arranged, with certification costs borne by the customer.
What are the 4Cs for coloured gemstones?
The 4Cs — Colour, Clarity, Cut, and Carat weight — are a framework used to understand and evaluate coloured gemstones. Unlike diamonds, coloured gemstones are assessed more holistically, with colour being the most important factor.
Color
Why is colour the most important factor?
Colour defines the character and desirability of a gemstone. Value is largely driven by how attractive, lively, and balanced the colour appears.
What aspects of colour are evaluated?
- Hue – the basic colour (e.g., blue, pink, yellow)
- Tone – lightness or darkness
- Saturation – intensity or purity
The most sought-after stones display strong saturation with a well-balanced tone.
Clarity
Do coloured gemstones need to be flawless?
No. Most naturally contain inclusions, and some inclusions are expected and acceptable.
What kind of clarity is considered desirable?
- Minimal or eye-invisible inclusions
- No impact on durability or brilliance
- Stones with pleasing eye-clean appearance are highly valued
Cut
Why is cut important for coloured gemstones?
Cut determines how a gemstone interacts with light and how its colour is displayed.
What makes a good cut?
A well-cut gemstone will:
- Enhance colour and brilliance
- Avoid windowing (see-through areas)
- Maintain pleasing proportions
Coloured gemstones are often cut to maximise colour and character rather than symmetry alone.
Carat Weight
Does a higher carat weight always mean higher value?
Not necessarily. Value depends heavily on colour, clarity, and cut.
Why does price increase sharply with size for fine gemstones?
Large gemstones with fine colour and clarity are rare, which is why pricing often rises non-linearly with size.
How does Gemstique evaluate the 4Cs?
The 4Cs are used as a guide rather than a rigid checklist. Each gemstone is evaluated for overall beauty, balance, and character — not just technical measurements.
We believe the right gemstone is the one that resonates visually and emotionally.
